Objective
This Proof of Concept will develop and validate a configurable platform that enables researchers to create and publish novel knowledge environments – navigable, evidence-linked digital publications that innovatively present the full relational architecture of complex scholarship. Researchers increasingly work with interconnected texts, images, objects, datasets, terminology, and layered interpretation, yet they still lack accessible technologies to publish this material while preserving its structure, evidential basis, and interpretive pathways. As a result, they must either reduce their work to linear formats such as articles and monographs, or invest substantial time and resources in developing bespoke digital solutions.
The project builds on the PI’s ERC-funded ATLOMY project, which has already demonstrated a working knowledge environment for ancient anatomical knowledge and generated traction for scaling beyond its research domain. The PoC will generalise this project-specific system into a platform that can support multiple research domains without bespoke rebuilding: it will guide researchers in organising their materials into a relational knowledge base and generate multiple interconnected publication views from a single structured core, including textual, visual, lexical, and citation-ready outputs.
The platform will be advanced and validated through: (1) three pilots in different domains, (2) user-research with scholars, and (3) stakeholder engagement with universities, libraries, and publishers. We will define practical conventions for citation, review, and discoverability, and test sustainable adoption pathways through service, licensing, and institutional uptake.
Knowledge environments will empower any researcher to create sophisticated, rigorous digital scholarly publications, without requiring costly one-off builds, thus expediting research outputs, and making widely possible richer, more transparent and more reusable forms of scholarship.
