MAP FOR THE MEDITERRANEAN: A Scalable Four-Dimensional Application to Manage Data on a Deep Environment.
The Mediterranean Sea is among the most complex regions globally, facing acute geopolitical and environmental tensions. The challenges it faces, and the opportunities it presents, extend beyond the surface into the deep waters, making traditional bidimensional mapping from above inadequate for analysis, teaching, and decision-making. Moreover, historical and scientific data on the Mediterranean’s depths remain fragmented across disciplines, institutions and national data infrastructures, while existing visualization tools overlook the temporal and three-dimensional complexity required for an integrated understanding of marine environments.
Building on the research outcomes of the ERC Consolidator Grant DEEPMED, which revealed the deep Mediterranean as a critical zone for submarine cables, anti-submarine warfare, marine biodiversity, and climate-driven convection processes, MAP4DMED aims to bridge this vital gap.
MAP4DMED will develop, validate and test with stakeholders (TRL5) a scalable Historical Geographic Information System (H-GIS) capable of aggregating, harmonizing and visualizing heterogeneous datasets on the evolving three-dimensional Mediterranean Sea through time.
Beyond visualization, MAP4DMED introduces a new analytical layer for marine spatial analysis: historically informed spatial intelligence. By integrating centuries of scientific, infrastructural and geopolitical data within a unified spatial-temporal architecture, the platform enables users to analyse long-term trajectories of maritime infrastructures, environmental processes and governance regimes.
The Proof of Concept will validate the platform with targeted stakeholders in marine spatial planning, environmental governance and interdisciplinary research infrastructures, sectors where historically informed spatial intelligence is currently absent but increasingly necessary.
