Objective
The competitiveness of EC companies in micro and nano technologies (MNT) very much relies on short time-to-market. That is true in particular for collaborative, distributed design and fabrication scenarios typical for an area where SMEs are strongly involved. Reduced time-to-market can only be achieved by faster product engineering. MNT product design and fabrication process development is an experimental task making use of key experiments or past experience to iteratively improve the engineering flow until a satisfying result has been reached. It is the objective of this project to contribute to ICT-based product engineering for MNT by: a) supporting integrated, distributed, multi-site product development with the customer in lead and control of the process, b) providing comprehensive and secure access to knowledge-bases for design and fabrication knowledge, c) offering ICT infra structure and tools needed to support customer services, design assistance and fab integration. The project work will provide contributions to: a) Developing a product engineering methodology and implementing it as a knowledge based, networked cooperation framework for customers, designers and manufacturers, b) Developing tools for an integrated design flow from the idea to the final product introducing tools to combine behaviour-oriented top-down and fabrication-oriented bottom-up design flows, c) Demonstrating the effectiveness of methodology and tools by realising example products. This work will contribute innovations in integrated design and production methodologies, ICT to assist and partially automate concurrent layout and process flow design, and knowledge-bases for customer services and fab data exploration. The consortium includes companies, in part SMEs, and institutes that contribute experience in design methodology and tools for MNT, MNT production in various technological areas, and networking and dissemination activities for the European MNT-industries.
