Chiral based spin organic light emitting diodes

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - SOLED (Chiral based spin organic light emitting diodes)

Periodo di rendicontazione: 2016-01-01 al 2017-06-30

While organic light emitting diodes (OLED) are becoming a major components in many applications (like smart phones, wide area TV etc.), obtaining high efficiency remains a challenge. Part of the problem is a result of many of the events, leading to light emitting in the OLED, are not efficient. It is expected that by controlling the electrons' spin, namely their angular momentum, the efficiency can be enhanced by several folds. We proposed to reach this goal by using chiral molecules, namely molecules that do not have mirror symmetry. These molecules were proven to transmit electrons with well defined spin. If spin controlled is achieved, one expects to obtain circular polarized light emitted from the OLED. In our research we indeed introduced different chiral molecules and monitored the circular polaried light emitted from the OLED. We obtained the world record in terms of circular polarization of the light.
