Summary of the context and overall objectives of the project

Am I leading a healthy lifestyle? More and more people are interested in the impact their food and exercise regime has on their health, weight and wellbeing.
“Breath Intelligence” is a small handheld system that measures metabolic markers in a person’s breath using miniature gas sensors in combination with a micro-column that separate the different metabolic markers before detection. The measured data is analyzed and presented to the user in an easy to understand fashion, with the goal to give helpful information about equilibrium between one’s effort and nutrition.
Many people train in fitness studios or on hometrainers using cardio-watches to exercise in the fatburning range but without the desired results. Having a look at the metabolism might help, since fatburning will only start once freely available sugar is depleted. Therefore, an easily accessible information about metabolic markers related to fatburning will immediately tell you, if your training is effective. You will then be able to easily adjust your daily routine to make the most of your training.
Furthermore, “Breath Intelligence”, will also be able to monitor other breath markers such as those related to hydration, alcohol and oral hygiene. The modular design of “Breath Intelligence” makes it possible to increase system functionality in an uncomplicated way.

Work performed from the beginning of the project to the end of the period covered by the report and main results achieved so far

In this feasibility study we evaluated the technological feasibility of the miniaturization of our “Breath Intelligence” prototype as well as the practicability of the modular design. The updated prototype is a more compact system with improved performance and a more user friendly interface. The evaluation of the practicability was shortened due to the current unavailability of other commercial products to compare “Breath Intelligence” to. Nonetheless we gained valuable information from trying to obtain the different systems and also from the preparation of the test study.The evaluation of the economic feasibility, with valuable input from the SME Instrument coach, helped us to better shape our model for the product positioning in the market, the market entrance strategy market potential share and pricing.

Progress beyond the state of the art and expected potential impact (including the socio-economic impact and the wider societal implications of the project so far)

Beyond the state of the art,“Breath intelligence” is providing a personal “Breath Print” focusing on a number of well identified relevant metabolic biomarkers. The relative evolution of the measured breath compounds will bring to the users the consciousness of their healthy way of life related to their nutrition’s habits. With the help of health professionals, general practitioners, nutritionists or fitness coaches, our clients will get an individual means of controlling their weight, nutrition and sport practice in a durable way. The project will provide a tool for the whole society to improve individual healthy life and wellbeing.
