Repair and protection of high cost tools by means of laser cladding and generating

Objective

This project is proposed by 5 SME's, which are all involved in the production and/or the repair of complex and high cost moulds and tools. In order to increase their competitivity they are looking for new, cost efficient repair techniques. Laser cladding and generating offer unique advantages over existing cladding techniques like: Iocal, selective and predse treatment of tools without damaging the surrounding areas Iow themmal load and consequently little or no tool distortion Iow dilution (< 2 %) of the clad layer with the base material very high adhesion between the clad layer and the base material Iess aftermachining than conventional techniques The aims of the project are: process development for repairing of high cost, complex shaped tools using Nd:YAG und diode laser radiation and powder additives analysis and real tests of the functional properties of laser repaired tools development of a modular, mobile repair head for laser radiation including powder feeding set up and test of a mobile demonstration plant showing this new technique economic assessment of the laser treatment The main applications are the repair of cast iron moulds, injection moulds and diecasting tools for cast iron, glass, ceramic, plastic and aluminium components. Successful completion should yield cost savings for the repairing of tools in the European special tool industry (80 90% SMEs) of 56 million ECU per year. By repairing the components (pins) of one injection mould for plastics cost savings of 43,500 ECU can be achieved at one of the proposers. Laser repairing by cladding and generating is also of high interest for SMEs working in the field of repairing of motor components, turbine components and high loaded parts.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
