Non-Intrusive Services to Support Focussed, Efficient and Enjoyable Local Activities

Objetivo

To deal with the problem of the intrusiveness of today's mobile technology and with how work in local environments can be enhanced by introducing the idea of non-intrusive services realised partly by disappearing computer environments.
The basis is a detailed analysis of a number of concrete scenarios where today's technologies for mobile and distributed work obviously create intrusions on local activities.

OBJECTIVES
1. To design appropriate disappearing computer environments;
2. To design mechanisms by which multiple services simultaneously can share and effectively use disappearing computer environments;
3. To employ the software agent paradigm for service design;
4. To establish a software platform which handles software components on small artefacts transparently, and manages open sets of services;
5. To perform usability studies for the disappearing computer environments.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
Given the project aim above, the case under consideration is the conflict between activities in the local physical and social context and parallel activities in distributed contexts. When technologies for distributed activities develop, in particular the rapidly developing mobile technology, a larger part of our time will be spent connected to our various distributed contexts. When we meet physically we bring technology, both artefacts and services, that enable us to participate in these non-local contexts, e.g. cellular phones, laptops, PDAs, etc., and the tendency now is that they intrude more and more on the local situations.
Potentially this phenomenon is a threat to Focused, Efficient and Enjoyable Local (FEEL) activities due to the intrusiveness of the technology.
To make services, supporting distributed and mobile work, non-intrusive in local physical and social contexts, we have combined the following approaches:
The strongly focus-demanding and clearly distinguishable artefacts in each physical space (like phones or PCs) should be substituted by fine-grained computing and communication artefacts that dynamically connect and virtually disappear in the natural scene of the local context (a disappearing computer environment). The main purpose with this is to widen the range of information channels.
Interaction will typically be non-focused, peripheral and partly subconscious.
Each service (either supporting local or distributed work) should be designed in terms of collaborating software agents with the properties of autonomy, pro-activity and context-awareness. Each service should take better counter measures with respect to the cognitive load of handling many parallel contexts and frequent shift of context. Our main approach will be to make the central objects in the services domain of discourse more active, encapsulating within these active objects partial knowledge about the rule systems of the domain.
