Improvement of Energy Efficiency in Glass-Melting Furnaces, Cement Kilns and Baking Ovens

Exploitable results

Process industries using glass-melting furnaces, cement kilns and baking ovens are responsible for an important proportion of industrial energy consumption and pollutant emissions in the EU. This project has developed dedicated modelling and advanced sensor applications which optimise process control and thus improve energy efficiency and reduce pollution from these processes. Glass, ceramic, cement and baking industries are highly energy intensive. The objective of this project was to develop knowledge and engineering tools able to assist in the optimisation of process design, control and operation. This will enable the energy efficiency of the process to be increased and thus pollution reduced. Advanced knowledge of the fuel flow and heat transfer processes in industrial furnaces, kilns and ovens is an essential basis to improving their design, control and operation. Dedicated modelling and advanced massive sensoring of all the industrial equipment involved in the process will permit the delivery of optimised control strategies and new design concepts. This will improve the energy efficiency and therefore reduce the pollution associated with the operation of kilns, furnaces and ovens.
