Objective
The objective of the project is to develop knowledge and engineering tools able to assist the optimization of design, control and operation of glass/ceramic furnaces, cement kilns and baking ovens in order to improve energy efficiency and reduce pollution. This goal will be achieved through the use of dedicated modelling, advanced massive sensoring and its application to enhanced model based control strategies.
The project will extend, widen, apply and improve the work carried out in a previous project (JOUE-CT90-0051).
Glass/ceramic, cement and baking industries are responsible for an important part of the industrial energy consumption and pollutant emissions in EC countries. Advanced knowledge of the fluid flow and heat transfer processes in their industrial furnaces, kilns and ovens is an essential basis to determine improved design and operation. Massive sensoring and dedicated modelling of the involved industrial equipment will permit the delivery of optimized control strategies and new design concepts for an improved energy efficiency in kilns, furnaces and ovens operation.
The above goals will be achieved as follows:
- Development and application of advanced sensors in harsh environments allowing the access to non-conventional controllable variables and extensive characterization of the process.
- Development and validation of dedicated physically-based models of kilns, furnaces and ovens (comprising associated equipment) through the use of multidimensional and dynamic approaches. The model will embody information obtained through the massive characterization of the equipment. Validation of the developed models will be achieved through experimental characterization with advanced sensors considered in the previous objective. Continued development and validation of multidimensional physically-based mathematical models will be undertaken to ensure an innovative model basis.
- Study of more energy efficient design and operation concepts, in basis of the modelling facilities and new sensoring capacities above referred. Lower cost pollutant abatement possibilities will be concurrently considered.
The tools to be developed will allow optimization of furnace/oven/kiln operating conditions, design and control. This approach will yield substantial energy savings, low-cost control of environmental impact and longer life cycle of equipment.
