Deliverables
Following the collection of multiple samples of laminate pouches and pharma blister packs (PLA Lead), AIM will lead the full analysis of the samples, including type of adhesive and Aluminium and the analysis of laminate packaging - type of polymer films used, number and thickness of layers; and the analysis of pharma blister packaging - type of plastic, grade and quantity of aluminium used
Social impacts analysis (opens in new window)IPM2 to lead. A social impacts analysis of the materials, products and technologies will be conducted using social life cycle assessment (S-LCA), which will be performed in parallel to LCA-LCC (task 7.3).
Report on mechanical recycling and sorting methods (SOTA) (opens in new window)Packing waste will undergo varying degrees of shredding and grinding. AIM will take the lead to work out the best technique to ensure efficient delamination and selective polymer dissolution. MIK will take the lead to develop NIR technology for sorting of the multilayer packaging containing aluminium.
Report on preliminary market analysis, dissemination plans and KPI results. (opens in new window)Following the completion of WP 1 and the submission of D1.1 – 1.3, TWI will issue a report on the results obtained from the market analysis, feedback from industry and the targeted markets. A preliminary strategy on how our technology will be marketed will be provided including communication strategy on targeted end users. The report will also list all dissemination activities and KPI results
Safety and health risk management procedures (opens in new window)IPM2 to take the lead on safety and health risk management procedures
Report on the solvent recycling protocols (opens in new window)TWI will take the dissolved polymer blend produced by following the procedure in Task 4.4 and use aqueous two- phase extraction for the recovery of hydrophilic ILs after filtration of the precipitated polymer. If hydrophobic ILs are selected in WP4, then extraction with organic solvent will be carried out.
Report on the analysis of isolated polymers (opens in new window)SOL will lead the development of the analysis method to ensure high purity and usable physical form of the recovered polymers.
Summarised results of process validation trials (opens in new window)(AIM to lead) After full installation of the pilot reactor system, Sol-Rec2 processes for polymer dissolution and recovery will be trialled and validated using the different types of multi-layer packaging waste sorted and characterised in WP2 and WP3.
Bench marking LCA (opens in new window)IPM2 to take the lead on production of a bench marking LCA. Study based on the current state of the art industrial scale technologies
Industry requirements for sustainable multi-layer packaging (opens in new window)TWI will take the lead to engage with key manufacturers of multilayer packaging and seek to establish a sound understanding of their individual requirements for multi-layer packaging and the key barriers currently restricting recycling.
Report on KPIs (opens in new window)An initial report on the established indicators and results up to month 3 will be submitted
Quality of recovered polymers (opens in new window)(MIK to lead) An extensive programme of analysis will be carried out on all the isolated polymers to confirm the quality of the recovered materials and assess performance in comparison to virgin polymer.
Methodology for decontamination (opens in new window)MIK will take the lead to test various decontamination strategies. The decontamination efficiency of each approach will thus be evaluated.
Participation to the creation of a Cluster of plastic circularity oriented projects (opens in new window)IPM² will contact similar projects within the same calls on Plastic recycling issues and circularity, create a Cluster, use the tools offered by EC to prepare common logos, branding, documentation, visuals, participate to events in common stands, sharing experience and exchanges on similar tasks, make presentations of both project whereabouts and Cluster content.
IPM2 will take the lead to complete consumer surveys to provide a detailed assessment of public attitudes towards multi-layer packaging and recycling.
IPM2 will take the lead to organize workshops aimed at improving consumer attitudes and behaviours towards multi- layer packaging waste and recycling
