Objective
THE PROJECT IS DIVIDED INTO THREE CONTRACTS: UNIVERSITE DE TECHNOLOGIE DE COMPIEGNE, CENTRE TECHNIQUE FORESTIER TROPICAL AND CEMAGREF. THE LATTER CEMAGREF IS PRESENTING ITS RESULTS IN THE FOLLOWING REPORT. CEMAGREF IS IN CHARGE OF THE SCIENTIFIC COORDINATION OF THE PROJECT AND IS SPECIALLY DEALING WITH THE SUSPENSION PYROLYSIS AND USE OF CHARCOAL SLURRIES IN BURNERS. ON THE LATTER POINT, NO EXPERIMENTS HAVE YET BEEN CONDUCTED BECAUSE THE SLURRY FORMULATION SHOULD BE FIRST OPTIMIZED.
AS TO SUSPENSION PYROLYSIS, CEMAGREF IS AIMING AT USING SMALL SIZED BIOMASS PRODUCTS WITHOUT PRELIMINARY PROCESSING. THE PYROLYSER COULD BE USED EITHER AS A FOREFURNACE OF A BURNER, OR FOR CHARCOAL PRODUCTION. THE TECHNOLOGY SELECTED IS A HORIZONTAL CYCLONE WITH A CONTINUOUS BIOMASS INTAKE. THE CYCLONE PROVIDES THE SEPARATION BETWEEN SOLIDS AND GASES NEEDED IN THE PROCESS, AS BELOW MENTIONED ON THE FIGURE.
THE FIRST TASK IS TO OBTAIN THE REQUIRED FLOW FOR BIOMASS PARTICLES IN THE CYCLONE, IN PARTICULAR A GOOD STABILITY EVEN WITH A HIGH OUTPUT, AND THE REQUIRED RESIDENCE TIME FOR PYROLYSIS. CURRENT AERODYNAMIC MODELS ON CYCLONE COULD NOT BE USED, BECAUSE BIOMASS PARTICLES ARE VERY HETEROGENEOUS AND ARE NOT SPHERICAL. THEREFORE, A FULL SIZED PLEXIGLASS MODEL WAS DESIGNED AND CONSTRUCTED TO BE TESTED UNDER REAL CONDITIONS, BUT AT LOW TEMPERATURE. THIS MODEL IS A VERY FLEXIBLE TOOL AS IT ALLOWS MANY FLOW PATTERNS TO BE TESTED. THE UNIT IS FITTED WITH A CONTINUOUS AUTOMATIC FEEDING OF CHOPPED STRAW FROM 70KG/H TO 450 KG/H. THE FEEDING SYSTEM WAS DESIGNED TO PROVIDE A VERY STEADY RATE, AND HAS NOW BEEN TESTED SUCCESSFULLY.
STRAW IS EXTRACTED THROUGH A PNEUMATIC TRANSPORT SYSTEM UP TO THE STORAGE TRAILER. THE GAS IS INTRODUCED INTO THE CYCLONE THROUGH EIGHT INLETS. ITS FLOW RATE, SPEED, AND DIRECTION CAN BE SELECTED ACCORDINGLY TO EACH INLET. ALL THE GAS RATES ARE MEASURED AND DATA ARE AUTOMATICALLY COLLECTED. THE UNIT WAS FITTED WITH SAFETY DEVICES AGAINST DUST EXPLOSION HAZARDS. THE WHOLE UNIT IS NOW READY TO BEGIN WITH STRAW CYCLONING EXPERIMENTS.
