Research to make Europe a leader in the quantum field

QuantERA III announces a new call for quantum science and technology research projects.

The EU-funded QuantERA III(opens in new window) project has launched a new call(opens in new window) for international research projects in quantum technologies. This forms part of the QuantERA network’s efforts to advance quantum research that connects people, promotes excellence and fosters responsibility across borders, industries and disciplines.

Continuing the momentum

QuantERA Call 2025 is the fifth call organised by the network since 2017 with a view to strengthening Europe’s leadership in the domain of quantum technologies. In a recent news item(opens in new window) posted on the QuantERA website, Elżbieta Hryniewicka, Chief International Cooperation Officer of QuantERA III project coordinator National Science Centre, Poland, explains how the programme has helped advance quantum technologies across Europe. “QuantERA, one of the best-established European networks, has funded quantum research for nearly a decade. By bringing together the efforts of over 30 countries, the network has accelerated the development of ground-breaking solutions,” she remarks, going on to highlight the new avenues opened by the latest call. “The launch of QuantERA III, with the involvement of a new partner from the [sic] South Korea, provides fresh momentum and confirms the programme’s significance as well as its ever-expanding reach.” Project consortia that wish to take part in the call must be composed of at least three partners that are eligible to receive funding from three or more countries participating in the call. Their research should explore collaborative advanced interdisciplinary science and/or cutting-edge engineering with the potential to initiate or promote new lines of quantum technologies.

Funded topics and research areas

Researchers can apply for funding in one of two topics. The first is ‘Quantum Phenomena and Resources’, where the goal is to lay the foundations for the quantum technologies of the future by focusing on basic quantum science and fundamental physics. The second topic is ‘Applied Quantum Science’, where the aim is to leverage known quantum effects and established concepts from quantum science, translating them into technological applications and developing new products. Funded projects in one of the two topics are expected to address one or more of the following areas: quantum communication, quantum simulation, quantum computation, quantum sensing and metrology, and general quantum science. Projects may be conducted over a 24- or 36-month period. The deadline for submissions is 5 December. Interested parties can find more information in the call announcement(opens in new window). Konrad Banaszek, scientific coordinator of the QuantERA funding initiative, comments: “Since its inception, the QuantERA programme has demonstrated a robust record of funding cutting-edge collaborative research exploring new concepts and methods in quantum science and technology. QuantERA Call 2025 aims to sustain this effort by providing support for fresh ideas and approaches in this very fertile scientific field.” The QuantERA III (QUANTERA III RIA: COFUND IN QUANTUM TECHNOLOGIES) project ends in 2030.
