Unlocking seaweed’s multitude of benefits

Ocean-grown seaweed could provide a sustainable feedstock for decarbonising the transport and chemical industries. OCEAN GARDENS aims to reap these rewards.

A natural source of hydrocarbons – or a means for sequestering them – seaweed has many potential uses. OCEAN GARDENS is a pioneering project developing large-scale offshore seaweed farms. It aims to build a 40 000 m² floating seaweed farm in Gran Canaria to prove it can be more cost-effective and scalable than traditional line-based methods. Aiming to produce 300 tonnes of dry biomass per year at a cost of just EUR 100 per tonne, the farm serves as a model for scalable, sustainable aquafarming that can be replicated across Europe
