A fresh approach to freshwater aquaculture
Raising and breeding fish, shrimp and other aquatic animals in freshwater is anything but easy – which is why the number of freshwater aquaculture systems (FWASs) in Europe continues to decline. To reverse this trend, the SAFE project developed several circular economy-based solutions designed to help FWASs become more economically viable while reducing their environmental impact. This includes using effluents and sludge as substrates for producing alternative biomasses such as algae, insects, worms, fungi and aquatic plants. The project is also leveraging AI to help FWASs reduce waste, improve water quality and enhance fish welfare.
