Towards full implementation of the KM3NeT Research Infrastructure

Project description

A pioneering deep-sea neutrino research infrastructure moves towards open access

The European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) is an instrument to develop the strategy to strengthen Europe’s research infrastructures and its international outreach. Since 2006, ESFRI has presented a series of Roadmap updates supporting a coherent and strategy-led approach to the development of pan-European research infrastructures. Among these is the Cubic Kilometre Neutrino Telescope, or KM3NeT, comprising a network of deep-sea neutrino telescopes in the Mediterranean that will open a new window into our Universe and the properties of the elusive neutrino particles. The EU-funded KM3NET-INFRADEV2 project will prepare a legal entity for KM3NeT and establish open access to the research infrastructure, providing a sustainable solution for its operation.

Objective

KM3NeT is a large Research Infrastructure comprising a network of deep-sea neutrino telescopes in the
Mediterranean Sea with user ports for earth and sea sciences instrumentation. The main science objectives, a description of the technology
and a summary of the costs are presented in the KM3NeT Letter of Intent. Following the appearance of KM3NeT on
the ESFRI roadmap 2016 and in line with the recommendations of the Assessment Expert Group this proposal
addresses the Coordination and Support Actions (CSA) to prepare a legal entity for KM3NeT and establish open access to the RI,
thereby providing a sustainable solution for the operation of the Research Infrastructure during ten (or more) years. During the EU-funded
Design Study (2006 - 2010) and Preparatory Phase (2008-2012), a cost-effective technology was developed, deep-sea sites
were selected and the Collaboration was formed. This proposal constitutes a second INFRADEV CSA dedicated to KM3NeT.
The project will be carried out within the context of the current KM3NeT Collaboration which already has a provisional implementation of the management and governance of the Research Infrastructure in place. The resources requested will be complemented by the
Collaboration.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: https://op.europa.eu/en/web/eu-vocabularies/euroscivoc.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
