Cel For the protection of natural surroundings, actions have to be undertaken at two different levels: - reduction of effluent volumes by avoiding water wastage during textile manufacturing. - improvement of waste water quality by pollution reduction and optimization of biodegradability. The aim of the study is to manage water consumption -on one hand, from source to feeding (pretreatment) -on the other hand, for its use in processes, a methodic analysis of processes should allow us to reduce pollution due to preparation and bleaching. It has been demonstrated that, working with proper process and equipment alternatives, water savings from 10% to 15% can be achieved over the whole process. Specifically, in rinsing, up to 50% of rinsing water may be saved depending on current procedures. Reduction of current consumption of auxiliary products can also be obtained. Substitution of auxiliaries by less polluting ones is a "must" to finishers when manufacturers are making remarkable efforts to meet with the most exigent eco-label standards. An evaluation of global pollution of the entire finishing process performed in this CRAFT project has shown that pollution from added chemicals in preparation phase, is about 25% of total. If an average of 20% of this can be eliminated, as appears from the results, 5% of global pollution is eliminated. This figure could be much higher if the methodologies developed in this project are transferred to other steps of the finishing process, so improving environmental parameters. These improvements are restricted by the pollution coming from impurities of natural fibres that can not be reduced. In practice, added pollution is ever higher than expected due to less efficient processes which may cause remounts and wastage. From the experience obtained with the project, it is clear that better process performance is the best way to improve environment performance.A data base concerning chemicals will be use order to select products according to ecological criteria. Laboratory trials will be supported by industrial ones. Moreover, a technico-economical balance will be carried out for each modification and for improvement which would been suggested. Final objective is to manage water consumption, optimize pollution and water quality.
