EVALUATION OF EXISTING EXPERIENCES AND POSSIBLE FIELDS OF APPLICATION OF DIFFERENT IMPREGNATION METHODS

Cel

THIS RESEARCH IS PART OF A JOINT PROGRAMME WITH BAM (BERLIN), AND BFA HAMBURG. ON THE INCREASE OF QUALITY AND WEATHER-RESISTANCE OF GLULAM COMPONENTS FOR EXTERIOR USE AND/OR DIRECTLY WEATHERED OR WITH GROUND CONTACT. IT ALSO EXTENDS TO THE EVALUATION OF EXPERIENCE PREVIOUSLY GAINED WITH THE PERFORATION METHOD SPECIFIED UNDER SERIAL NO. 5 IN THE INDIVIDUAL EUROPEAN COUNTRIES.
IN THE COURSE OF A EUROPEAN SEMINAR TO BE ORGANISED, STANDARDS OF KNOWLEDGE IN THE FIELD OF SCIENCE, THE MECHANICAL-ENGINEERING AND TIMBER INDUSTRIES ARE TO BE COMPARED AS A MEANS OF OPTIMIZING THE POSSIBE USES OF VARIOUS IMPREGNATING METHODS AS ADAPTED TO THE SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS IN PRACTICAL BUILDING.
THE GENERAL AIM OF THE RESEARCH PROJECT IS TO IMPROVE THE POOR IMPREGNATING PROPERTIES OF CUSTOMARY EUROPEAN SPECIES OF TIMBER, IN PARTICULAR SPRUCE, BY APPLYING APPROPRIATE MECHANICAL TECHNIQUES COMPLEMENTED BY THE USE OF CHEMICAL SUBSTANCES DESIGNED TO BRING ABOUT A TIMBER MODIFICATION TO RENDER SERVICE IN DIRECTLY WEATHERED OUTDOOR AREAS. IN THIS WAY IT WILL BE POSSIBLE TO DEVELOP NEW MARKETS FOR EUROPEAN WOOD VARIETIES (BRIDGE BUILDING, HIGH-TENSION POLES, WOODEN WINDOWS REQUIRING LITTLE MAINTENANCE AND RAILWAY BUILDING PURPOSES), AT THE SAME TIME CURBING THE IMPORT OF WHAT ARE BY AND LARGE RESISTANT NON-EUROPEAN WOOD SPECIES, THUS MAKING A CONTRIBUTION TOWARDS JOB SECURITY IN THE FORESTRY AND WOOD INDUSTRIAL SECTORS.
