RESEARCH ON THE USES OF OIL RESERVOIRS IN FRACTURED ROCKS FOR THE STORAGE OF LIQUID AND/OR GASEOUS HYDROCARBONS

Cel

To find out whether oil recovery from the fractured, heavy oil reservoir of Gela,Italy, can be enhanced by replacing the natural water drive mechanism with the injection of either natural gas or carbon dioxide.

Laboratory tests have been performed on cores to assess how gas drainage improves oil recovery in comparison with water imbition, and how injected gas affects the thermodynamic characteristics of reservoir oil. A three-dimensional, black oil numerical model has been employed to evaluate the improvement in oil recovery and oil production rate that can be achieved under different gas injection schemes. The model had been previously validated by matching field past history; the future field performance by natural water drive has also been evaluated, to provide a basis for comparison.

RESULTS:

From the results of the numerical model study it appears that oil recovery from gela field can be significantly improved by substituting the natural bottom water drive with crestal injection of either natural gas or carbon dioxide. As the results of a field pilot in a large field such as Gela are difficult to interprete and evaluate, the testing of high pressure gas injection has been switched to the nearby Ponte Dirillo oil field, whose characteristics are very similar to those of Gela (project no 05.14/79).
