Rezultaty
Building upon results which have been gathered in WP2 on language policies, WP3 on language ecologies, and WP4 on language safeguarding methods, in collaboration with YEN and other organisations collaborating with RISE UP within the case studies, we will produce a database and typology of language revitalisation strategies and actions in our case study regions, supplemented by relevant examples from our own experiences and contacts elsewhere. This will enable us to formulate guidelines towards the end of the project to suit different types of context, in order to also support other speaker groups of endangered languages.
Collection of practices, activities and tools that promote minority languages (odnośnik otworzy się w nowym oknie)D4.1 comprises a research part (research questions, methodology andresults) and a resource part. The latter will offer a collection of practices, activities and tools (e.g. websites, resources and events) that promote minority languages especially among the younger generation (beyond the case studies). As a result of the research, these practices, activities and tools will be presented according to the level(s) they have the most impact on (micro, meso, macro level) and with the selected case studies as examples. Moreover, D4.1 will also give an overview of which of the identified practices, activities and tools are used by the chosen case studies and which are not.
Report on good practice strategies in language revitalisation (odnośnik otworzy się w nowym oknie)D4.3 is based on developing online and offline tools and the monitoring of their implementation as well as their evaluation. It includes results on testing these tools against the background of the quality criteria identified in D 4.2, while those are constantly refined and validated.
Description of a European language preservation Ecosystem (odnośnik otworzy się w nowym oknie)All European countries are multilingual, i.e. more than one language variety is used in each. Each language exists in an ecosystem: in relation to other languages and non-linguistic factors that affect language use: e.g. policies, education, inter-group relations. Some ecologies are healthy and support sustainable multilingualism, but more often linguistic ecologies are unbalanced and disadvantage minority languages and their speakers. Languages become endangered when speakers abandon them for a language that is associated with a more powerful group or with social advantage, or because the speakers suffer from discrimination. This deliverable aims to describe and analyse the ecologies of all the case study languages, utilising and developing the framework developed by Calvet (1998). Some of these languages are crossborder languages and so have a more complex ecosystem; this is fairly common in Europe and worldwide. These analyses will give an overview of how languages and their groups are playing important roles on international, European and regional level and what their levels of intervention are, also in order to identify pathways of support and decision making on the one hand and useful connections and networking opportunities on the other. We also aim to identify common patterns in order to produce generalisable recommendations.
Report on past and present language policies including reasons for becoming an endangered language (odnośnik otworzy się w nowym oknie)This report will give a rough overview of historic and present general strategies being applied when it comes to language policies and their impact on the vitality of languages. In addition, it will go into more detail concerning the chosen use cases to illustrate their path of becoming an endangered language. It will also explore additional factors which contribute to the loss of speakers.
Definition of quality criteria for practices, activities and tools (odnośnik otworzy się w nowym oknie)D4.2 defines general quality criteria for the practices, activities and tools for the promotion of minority languages on the basis of the outcomes of D4.1. The quality criteria are the result of a co-operative engagement in which community members and stakeholders from the case studies (and beyond) are included.
Evaluation report of methods being used (odnośnik otworzy się w nowym oknie)A detailed and systematic evaluation of the methods introduced by RISE UP beyond those identified in D5.1 and under use of the previously in D4.2 identified quality criteria will be made.
User engagement and gamification concept in the domain of endangered languages (odnośnik otworzy się w nowym oknie)This document will summarize the state-of-the-art of gamification for the project’s domain, the findings on user needs for the RISE UP digital toolset and describes the elaborated gamification concept.
Report on need for further research (odnośnik otworzy się w nowym oknie)Building upon results gathered throughout the project and through engagement with speaker communities themselves, needs will be identified and suggestions for further research will be collected and presented.
Involvement of local cultural & creative sector: possible strategies and experience (odnośnik otworzy się w nowym oknie)This deliverable will detail the research carried out on cultural and creative centers in the local areas of the languages of study. These institutions can be: art centers, libraries, anthropological museums, museums linked to archaeological heritage, science museums, artists' associations, cultural associations linked to the preservation of languages, etc. A detailed list and information on exhibitions and activities carried out in recent years related to languages in danger of disappearing and their cultural context will be offered. The deliverable will specify the alliances reached at the local level to cooperate in the realization of exhibitions: online or on site. The curatorial design of the exhibition for each linguistic area will be documented, available online, and at least two carried out in situ, produced in collaboration with local entities. The exhibitions held in situ will have a detailed chapter with images and some initial conclusions of the impact on the community.
